Euro 2028 at St James' Park: what five matches mean for Newcastle & the North East

In June 2028, one of the world's biggest sporting events lands in Newcastle. Here's what's confirmed, what it means for the region — and why anyone working here that summer should be thinking about it now.

When UEFA and the UK & Ireland 2028 organisers set out the tournament's shape in November 2025, Newcastle got a generous share: St James' Park will host five matches at Euro 2028 — four group-stage fixtures drawn from four different groups, plus a Round of 16 knockout tie on Sunday 25 June 2028. If England top their group, that last-16 game could be England's. For a month, the eyes of a continent will be on Tyneside.

What's confirmed so far

The tournament kicks off at the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff on Friday 9 June 2028 and concludes with the final at Wembley on Sunday 9 July 2028. Nine stadiums across the UK and Ireland will stage matches, with the quarter-finals split between Dublin, Glasgow, Cardiff and London, and both semi-finals and the final at Wembley. The organisers say more than three million match tickets will be available — more than any previous European Championship — making this the largest sporting event the co-host nations have ever staged together. Newcastle's five games put it firmly on that map: a city-sized football festival, four groups' worth of travelling supporters, and a knockout Sunday to finish.

Why it matters beyond the football

Host-city status isn't just ninety minutes five times over. Tournaments bring an ecosystem with them: broadcast and media crews who arrive early and stay for weeks, tournament operations staff, hospitality and security teams, sponsors' activation crews, and fan zones that need building, staffing and taking down again. Around them come the supporters themselves — tens of thousands per match day, many making a week of it and using Newcastle as a base for the wider tournament. Every one of those groups needs somewhere to stay, and the city's hotel stock will be under pressure it has rarely seen.

The regional backdrop makes the timing sweeter. Newcastle is already mid-way through a run of major city projects — we've written about the rebuilding of Newcastle's skyline — and a global shop window in 2028 gives every one of those schemes a deadline worth hitting.

The build-up starts well before kick-off

If you work in events, broadcast, construction, security or hospitality, Euro 2028 isn't a June 2028 story — it's a 2027 story. Venue preparations, city-centre works, fan-zone builds and logistics planning all front-load the year before, and that means project teams arriving on placements measured in weeks and months, not nights. It's the same pattern we see with every major programme in the region, from the A19 corridor to the coast: the work comes first, and the people doing it need a proper base — not a scatter of hotel rooms.

Planning to be here for it?

Our whole-house base in Forest Hall (NE12) sits on the Metro side of Newcastle — a straightforward run into the city centre and St James' Park, with off-street parking, a full kitchen, en-suite bedrooms and fast Wi-Fi. It's set up for contractors and project teams, corporate placements and long stays alike, and there's more on the wider area on our Newcastle page. For getting around during a busy tournament month, the Metro and rail links do the heavy lifting — our guide to getting around the North East explains why you won't need to drive into a match-day city.

We don't publish a nightly rate — team size, length of stay and dates change the numbers too much. Tell us what your placement or stay looks like and we'll come back with a tailored team or long-stay rate, usually the same working day. For summer 2028, the honest advice is simple: the earlier the conversation, the better the options.

Booking the house. You can book the property directly at dovecoteroad.com — live availability and instant booking, commission-free — or send us the details and we'll handle it for you. For multi-week or recurring stays, talk to us first so we can set the right rate.

Professional & residential stays only. Our homes are let for work, relocation and longer-term living — not for parties, events or short social bookings. Every enquiry is vetted.
